Finding My Way Forward
In 2019, I was on top of the world. I had finally earned my license as a Registered Nurse after 4 years of nursing school while working full-time as a paramedic. A few weeks into my new job as a nurse in the Emergency Department, I was diagnosed with a rare, chronic condition that impaired my ability to speak and communicate with others.
That diagnosis stopped me cold in my tracks. It felt like an impassable roadblock, like I would never get to the places I wanted to go in life. I felt paralyzed with anxiety about my future, and confused about what to do next. I became so weighed down by stress and emotional fatigue that I felt I could not take another step.
But somehow, I did take a step. And then another. Eventually, I saw a new path forward. Want to know what made the difference? I realized that no matter how bad things seemed in a moment, that moment always passed- and I was actually ok. I started to trust that I was connected to something much bigger than just my mind and my body. And I began to see that I was always just one thought away from well-being, regardless of my physical health, or any other situation or circumstance.
With support from my family and friends, and the help of some talented medical professionals, my medical condition improved and I changed direction. I pivoted to working in the Operating Room, where I had the privilege to help patients facing challenges much harder and hills much steeper than my own. Through this experience, I began to really understand that we are all doing the best we can in every moment, and that is enough.
